Polio vaccination in Gaza continues – Global Issues
Hundreds of Gazan families have been queuing for their child’s chance to be vaccinated against polio since Sunday morning, in a campaign designed to stop a resurgence of the virus, which is suspected to be re-emerging due to unsanitary conditions.
Speaking to international media on Sunday, Sam Rose, spokesperson for UNRWA, the UN organization for Palestine refugees, said that more than 200 groups are carrying out this mission in 25 areas in central Gaza.
Mr. Rose said the groups, going “tent to tent”, need to reach all children in Gaza under the age of 10 for the campaign to be successful.
This operation – organized by UNRWA, the World Health Organization (WHO), the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Palestinian Ministry of Health – will continue in the coming days, if the fighting between Hamas and the Israeli army is not temporarily stopped.
