Earlier today, the BBC revealed that it will be re-airing 1969’s “War Games,” the final ten-part black-and-white series it built. Doctor Who season six. That would be remarkable in itself, but the network is taking it a step further by presenting it in color for the first time. In this series, the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton) and his companions Jamie and Zoe learn that an alien called the War Lord has extracted soldiers from Earth’s history and combined them with brains to fight each other so that he can use the survivors as an army to conquer the galaxy. In the decades since, it has been called the most important WHO episodes, and we were high on a cliffhanger with its first episode back in 2010.
But this new version of “War Games” not only gets a brighter color, it also comes with updated scores and visuals. Interestingly, those changes may also affect how the Doctor regenerates into Jon Pertwee’s Third Doctor. While the original version is a trippy, almost nightmarish sequence as he is forced into a new look and pleads for the transformation to stop, the technicolor trailer hints at a process that is more in keeping with the glowing flames of the show that now surround his body.
Although this makes sense on a practical level and provides consistency Doctor Who it’s now, it may also contradict the point of the Doctor’s regeneration at that time. Unlike most future season changes, this is a punishment for breaking the Time Lords’ no-disturbing rule: it should shock him and the audience, especially since this was the first time he saw other members of his race. .
If the BBC’s opinion changes this update don’t sit well with yourself, just yet Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies said the black-and-white “War Games” will be available in its original form on BBC iPlayer. The color version will hit the platform and telecast on the same day: December 23.
