Apple is reportedly testing a blood sugar monitoring app
Apple is reportedly still working on glucose management – this time using software. BloombergMark Gurman says the company tested the app this year on people with diabetes, helping them manage their diet and lifestyle. Apple is said to have no plans to launch the app to consumers, but could be involved in future health products.
It is said that the company has internally tested this application, employees confirm through blood tests that they are at risk of developing type 2 diabetes. The subjects “actively monitored their blood sugar with various devices available on the market,” logging changes associated with glucose. The app then recognizes the correlation between dietary changes and blood sugar levels (for example, “don’t eat pasta”).
Gurman says Apple has paused testing to focus on other aspects of health. Bloomberg notes that the Apple Health app currently lacks food tracking, something offered by competitors. The book also says that Apple could eventually offer deeper integration of glucose tracking from its products.
The study was reportedly not directly related to Apple’s 15-year quest to provide non-invasive blood glucose monitoring, something that seems to recur in Apple Watch rumors every cycle. The company’s current hardware prototype is reportedly an iPhone-sized wearable device that uses lasers to shoot light at the skin. Gurman says Apple’s first consumer version — whether it’s on the Apple Watch or another device — will likely only notify users if they might have diabetes. Providing a certain level of glucose should come over time.
