Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori made a great start to their all-important Asian tour with a stunning run to the China Open title in Beijing.
The third seed defeated Wimbledon champions Henry Patten and Harri Heliovaara 4-6, 6-3, 10-5 in a thrilling final on Wednesday to clinch their third ATP Tour title of 2024. Bolelli and Vavassori’s latest victory represents another big step in their success. bid for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.

“We played four very good games [and] we really enjoyed our time here,” said Bolelli after lifting the trophy. “I am very happy to share this title with Andrea, we are having a great season so we will try to enjoy it and continue.”
Bolelli and Vavassori are third in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Teams Rankings, 465 points behind fourth-placed Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson, and are in strong contention to make their first team appearance at the end of the season in Turin.
The Italians were about to pull out a set in Beijing heading into the play-offs in the Chinese capital, but found themselves up against a wall when their rivals took the lead. However, they held their own to save the four break points they faced in the second set, according to Infosys ATP Stats, to reach the final.
In the equalizing break, Bolelli and Vavassori stood strong to advance beyond reach, they managed to close, winning in one hour and 32 minutes.
With their three tour-level titles in 2024, Patten and Heliovaara are tied for seventh in the PIF ATP Live Doubles Race. The Wimbledon champions will be looking for strong results in Shanghai again in the coming weeks to secure their place in the exciting qualifying battle for Turin.
