Wins Baby Reindeer, Bear and Crown stars
British actress Jessica Gunning, one of the stars of the hit TV show, Baby Reindeer, has received one of the most prestigious awards in TV, the Emmy Award.
Gunning, who played stalker Martha, was nominated for best supporting actress in a limited series at the ceremony.
“Oh my god, I’m blinking,” he said as he accepted the award.
“Thank you so much. I honestly feel like I’m going to wake up any minute and this was all a dream.”
Its star and show creator, Scottish comedian Richard Gadd, won best writer for a limited series, and the show is also nominated for several other awards at the ceremony, held in Los Angeles.
“Ten years ago, I was on my way out,” Gadd told the audience.
“I never thought I would get my life back together. I never thought I could fix what happened to me and get back on my feet.
“And here I am, just ten years later, taking home major television writing awards.
“I don’t mean to sound arrogant. I say this as an encouragement to anyone who is going through a difficult time right now to persevere.”
Baby Reindeer, Gadd’s account of being stalked by a woman for several years and sexually assaulted by a man in the TV industry, was the most talked about show of the year.
However, there has also been controversy, and the real woman who is said to have inspired Gunning’s character is currently suing Netflix for defamation, negligence and breach of privacy.
A bear’s recipe for success
Bear won three acting awards in the comedy categories, including best actor in a comedy for Jeremy Allen White, who plays Carmy, for the second year in a row.
Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Richie) and Liza Colon-Zayas (Tina) took home the supporting awards, the latter seemingly overwhelmed by the star cast of Meryl Streep and Carol Burnett.
“To all the Latinas who are watching me, keep believing, and vote – vote for your rights,” she said in her acceptance speech.
The show, which is set in a high-pressure kitchen, has raised eyebrows by being nominated again in the comedy category instead of a drama.
Veteran actress Jean Smart held off a sweep for The Bear, winning best comedy actress – her sixth career Emmy – for Hacks.
In the drama categories, Australia’s Elizabeth Debicki won her first Emmy, best actress for playing Princess Diana in the final season of Netflix’s The Crown.
“Playing this part based on this incomparable, wonderful person has been my greatest privilege and gift,” she said.
Billy Crudup won best supporting actor in a drama for The Morning Show.
British talent that won included TV presenter John Oliver, who won best written variety series, and Will Smith, who won best drama writing for Slow Horses.
Traitors host Alan Cumming took the show’s trophy for a reality show or competition show. That came after he was named best competition host at the Creative Arts Emmys, which happened a week before the big event.
