24 people died in Haiti after a fuel tank exploded, according to local authorities.

Dozens of people were left seriously injured – some with burns up to 80% of their bodies, according to Haitian Prime Minister Garry Coville.

The incident took place on Saturday near the town of Miragoane, 100 kilometers from the capital Port-au-Prince.

According to media reports, the tank collided with another car and started leaking fuel on the road. The explosion happened when people rushed to collect the spilled fuel.

“It’s a terrible incident we’ve just seen,” said Mr Coville on the tarmac of Port-au-Prince airport, where some of the injured were arriving.

He vowed to do everything in his power to ensure that the victims receive the medical care they need.

Emmanuel Pierre, the head of Haiti’s civil protection unit, told AFP news agency that the death toll was raised to 16 when more bodies were found near the site of the explosion.

This is not the first time that there have been many deaths in Haiti due to the explosion of a gas tank.

More than 60 people died as a result same event in 2021.

Haiti has been experiencing a period of great violence and instability, as the government battles violent gangs that have taken control of parts of the country.
