Magnetic Motion: LS Electric’s Free Solution for safe and clean workplaces
We recently had an interview with LS Electric, originally part of the LG Group, started in 1974 as Lucky Packing. In 2003, it separated from LG and became part of the LS Group, renamed LSIS. In 2020, LSIS adopted its current name, LS Electric.
LS Electric specializes in power equipment, automation systems, and solutions for power plants, substations, and distribution networks. Their services include power equipment diagnostics and preventive maintenance programs.
We tested their LS Smart Moving Management System (SMMS) in our interviews with LS Electric. This conveyor belt replacement system uses magnetic energy instead of traditional belts to move materials through production lines.
The main advantage of SMMS is that the magnetic force is applied directly to the object being moved—specifically, to pallets equipped with magnets—rather than relying on a conveyor belt that moves the entire line. The coils and sensors in the system stimulate the magnetic force to move the pallets, making the movement more efficient. This system allows pallets to move vertically, creating multi-level production lines where items can be raised or lowered between different aisles.
Since the motion is contactless, SMMS experiences less friction and contamination than traditional transmitters. Without a conveyor belt, the risk of accidents related to conveyors is greatly reduced. LS Electric highlights that in the US alone, conveyor belts are responsible for about 9,000 accidents per year, making safety one of the most important benefits of SMMS.
Another clear benefit for human safety is the reduction of dust, dirt, and lubricants in the work area, due to the elimination of belt friction.
In addition to improved safety, the absence of collisions means a longer system life, although more data is needed to measure this over time.
Apart from hardware, SMMS offers a software interface. Users can customize production lines using a graphical drag-and-drop tool. Some coding can be done using ChatGPT’s powerful interface, with built-in authentication to ensure functionality. The software runs in a browser, allowing remote maintenance that makes it easy for technicians to manage multiple sites or respond quickly to problems. Few industrial systems offer this user-friendly experience, reflecting the trend toward more accessible technology in the industry.
LS Electric notes that SMMS saves energy, as it moves only the materials, not the entire production line. While this claim makes sense in theory, we are eager to see more data when it becomes available. LS Electric will be showcasing its technology at CES 2025.
