Borderlands Is Officially One of the Biggest Flops of 2024
While 2024’s box office so far has been outstanding from both major studios—Inside Out 2, Deadpool and Wolverine– and indie (how about, Long Legs?) areas, some bombs also fell. Another very notable one The Borderlandsenduring production delays and negative pre-release buzz, it then opened to poor reviews and poor audience attendance, then made the lickety-split jump to home release a few weeks later. But how bad are we talking? well…
IGN cites data from box office figures The Borderlands‘ The worldwide theatrical haul is just a fraction of its estimated (Variety) budget of $115 million, and an estimated $30 million on top of that for marketing and distribution. Currently, it’s made just under $33 million, a total that’s evenly split between the US ($15 million) and international markets ($17 million). That number is especially impressive since the film is based on a popular video game that was meant to be translated into a fun film built in, directed by Eli Roth, and had an incredibly killer cast including Cate Blanchett, Gina Gershon, and Jamie Lee Curtis. .
There are three and a half months left in the year, so it’s too early to decide which film will take the “greatest of all time” crown, and there are other contenders; others, like him Furiosa: The Mad Max Sagafailed to make back their budgets but earned positive reviews, while others, liked it Madame Webfound that broadcast audiences are better than theater audiences. Will The Borderlands did you find redemption? Will it come out of the darkness, Howard the Duck-style, religious worship in a few decades? Time will tell.
