Sony looks set to announce the PS5 Pro today with an oddly short live stream

We won’t have to wait long to get all the official details on the PlayStation 5 Pro. Sony has announced a PlayStation 5 Technical Presentation that will be broadcast at 11AM ET on September 10 on the PlayStation YouTube channel.

All indications point to this being the official launch of the PS5 Pro. Mark Cerny, PS5 lead architect, will host the broadcast, which will focus on “PS5 and gaming technology innovation.” This comes just days after Sony teased a redesigned PS5 in an image accompanying various PS5 Pro leaks. The company was also expected to launch the PS5 Pro in mid-September ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Add all that, and the tagline “The Journey Continues” to the teaser video, and it’s pretty clear what we’re talking about. For what it’s worth, Cerny explained the details of the PS5 behind the lectern in the 2020 live stream (Sony had to pull out of a scheduled Game Developers Conference speech after the COVID-19 pandemic).

The PS5 Pro rumor mill suggests that the mid-cycle update will bring improved and consistent frame rates at 4K resolution and 8K performance mode in supported games. Game rendering is said to be 45 percent faster than the standard PS5, while the Pro’s ray tracing capabilities are reportedly two to three times faster.

Update, September 10 2024, 9:05AM ET: This story has been updated with a link to the PlayStation live stream.
