Use This ‘Simple But Permanent’ Career Tip That Will Change Your Outlook On Career Development

There is a lot of career advice out there. Most of them are out of date or out of date. The workplace has changed a lot since 2020, and our way of working needs to adapt. With so many choices to be made about your career, short and long term, I’m a fan of keeping things simple.

The only career advice you need to follow is choosing which of these three paths you currently fall into and how they will shape your career path. They include:

  • Reading – Preparing new skills, certificates, degrees and training.
  • Leading – Focused on gaining opportunities, status, networks and growth.
  • Coasting – Go with the flow; it allows you to focus on other things and recharge.

You can choose one or two of these channels at a time, and switching from one to another is also fine. Many factors affect your route, including the season of your job, lifestyle changes and how much energy you have to bring. I use this method over other career advice because it is timeless and can help put you in the right frame of mind for the next set of decisions you need to make.

None of these options on the right one. The beauty is that you get to choose which options work best for you. Sometimes, I realize that I am at a stage where I need to learn and lead. Sometimes, I realize that I need a beach for many reasons. Sometimes, I need to go away for a while to recharge so that I can learn and achieve better in the near future. Sometimes, personal events need to be prioritized, which causes me to drift.

So, what lane(s) are you on right now? Here’s how I help identify where I am and what I need to do next:

  • Reading -This is your patient but active stage. You trust the process and invest in yourself. You can see the power.
  • Leading — This is your “why don’t you do it for me?” take everything you’ve learned and gained and apply it to your next career jump.
  1. Check if there are any income opportunities in your current job.
  2. If they are, book a meeting with the decision maker as soon as possible.
  3. If they aren’t, it’s time to job-hop.
  4. If the opportunity in your current job is not a good fit (be it from time, scope of work, salary, etc…), it is time to quit the job.
  • Coasting – This is your chance to relax. Career growth is not always linear, so if you need to step off the gas pedal to research your next step or focus on personal matters, this is your time!

If you’re feeling stuck or need help figuring out where to go next, look at what paths you’re currently on and see if this is the right path for you to move forward. Especially with your career, consider job hopping if you don’t see a path to more opportunities.

Eventually you will need more opportunities to earn money from your current job. This is natural and indicative of your success.

As a fellow Gen Z, I can confidently say that we consider skipping work to be today’s promotion. Gone are the days of waiting for your employer when there are many other opportunities to grab. The opportunity cost of staying at an employer that no longer matches your career goals has never been higher.
