James Gunn Lifts The Lid On DC’s Creature Commandos
DC Comics fans have found a theater Creature Commandos at San Diego Comic-Con in July; now, we know exactly when the animated series that will properly begin James Gunn’s reign of DC will arrive: Thursday, December 5. After the premiere, you can watch a new entry every week on Max until January 16, for a total of seven episodes. .
A press release announcing the day—along with the fiery new photo you see here—reiterated the official entry line: “Creature Commandos follows a secret team of captive monsters recruited on a mission deemed too dangerous for humans. When all else fails… they are your last, worst option.”
It also dropped with an ensemble cast: Steve Agee as Economos, Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana, Anya Chalotra as Circe, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel, David Harbor as Frankenstein, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Indira Varma as The Bride, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller.
The show is written by Gunn, who is also one of its executive producers—and one of the guys (along with Peter Safran) who oversaw this brand new chapter of DC. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, he expressed his excitement about the game and the future of DC. He has his own live acts Superman The film, which will arrive next summer, is, of course, described as a “humongous epic.” Creature closetson the contrary, “it’s a way for people to catch up [of the new DC universe] and see how it tastes.”
In conversation, match Creature Commandos in his Marvel trilogy Guardians of the Galaxy movies; from that official entry line you can see the similarities, and Gunn admits he’s a fan of “oddballs and oddballs and oddities.” (And it’s not like his Suicide Squad movie actors, come to think of it.) However, there’s also a key difference: “The Guardians are all really good characters at heart, and that’s not the case with creatures.”
Head over to EW to read more from Gunn, including how his take on Frankenstein and The Bride will differ from what horror fans are used to from the classic characters; and how he plays Creature Commandos will provide “plenty of hints of things to come [in the DC universe] … I think it’s just a fun way to start.”
Creature Commandos starts on December 5 with Max.
