Jannik Sinner is the man to beat in tie-breaks.

The Italian has won 13 of his last 14 breaks and came up big against Tommy Paul in his fourth-round win at the US Open on Monday. He won the first and second tiebreaks en route to the quarter-finals.

“I had those moments where I missed a lot of breaks. I mean, it’s normal, but you’re trying to learn from this. I always try [enjoy the pressure]. If you take breaks, you also have break points,” said Sinner. “I’m coming out of the snow. When skiing, you make one mistake and it’s game over or race over. In tennis, there is a different logic and of course [why I embrace it].”

Sinner has often produced his best form in the big moments this season, highlighted by his win at the Australian Open in January when he came from two sets down to win his first title.

The number 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings enjoys playing big scores and feels it makes the hard work in training pay off.

“I’m always very happy when I play important points, important moments. In my mind, this is what we practice. That’s why you do a repeat in the courts where you have to maybe change a few things to try to surprise him,” said Sinner. “You have to work smarter. In the second half [against Paul]I didn’t help much, but I tried to find a solution somehow.”

With his win, Sinner improved to 3-1 in his Lexus ATP Head2Head series against Paul. The 23-year-old has reached at least the quarter-finals of all four majors this season, becoming the eighth men’s singles player since 2000 to do so.

The top seed is chasing his sixth title of the season and will next face Daniil Medvedev, who leads Sinner 7-5 in the Lexus ATP Head2Head series. World No. 5 Medvedev was the last player to win a break equal to Sinner, which came when Medvedev won the quarter-final at Wimbledon in July.
