Canelo Is Empowered To “Destroy” Berlanga, Hopkins Says
Bernard Hopkins says Edgar Berlanga “empowered” Canelo Alvarez to destroy him on September 14th.
Canelo’s First Goal: “To Get Beat Up,” Not To Destroy
Hopkins feels that superstar Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) was initially going to just “beat him up” and let him fight another day to enjoy his career, but New York’s Berlanga (22)-0, 17 KOs) spoke out, Alvarez will leave him at a disadvantage.
WBA, WBC and WBO super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez will defend against #1 WBA mandatory Berlanga on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The event will be shown live on DAZN PPV, priced at $89.99.
Berlanga, 27, seems to have been upset to hear that Canelo would feel sorry for him at first. He feels that is a sign of weakness on his part because that is not how he fights. Berlanga shows no mercy to his opponents, and that has to be seen. His 16 first-round knockouts are proof that he shows no weakness.
Berlanga’s Trash Talk: Fuel to the Fire
“Canelo gets knocked out in six or seven rounds,” Bernard Hopkins told the media, predicting that Canelo Alvarez will win by knocking out Edgar Berlanga on September 14. “Sure, that’s why he’s going to get knocked out,” Hopkins said when told that Berlanga is predicting a Canelo knockout.
If Berlanga hadn’t focused on getting the uppercut, Canelo would have stopped him quickly. So, he better take the fight to himself and go out with his shield. At least if he fights that way, he has a slim chance of winning if he doesn’t catch him early like he did with his last opponent, Padraig McCrory, on February 24.
“He must come to the fire. I’m going with Canelo. I could be wrong, but I doubt it. Anything is possible, right? But if you ask me who I would want if I had to put money down, Canelo all day,” said Hopkins.
“He knows something very bad [Berlanga] what did you do to Canelo? He gave him the power to destroy him. You know, sometimes you shut up, and the boy doesn’t hit you hard. Leaving with the duty to fight another war one day. He blew that away. “Canelo took that off the table,” said Hopkins.
Berlanga is trying to sell this fight to make as much money as possible. With an event priced at $89.99 on PPV, it’s going to scare a lot of fans, and it’s not going to bring in a lot of buys. That makes it very important for Berlanga to talk trash in order to increase the level of buys to make more money on PPV.
“It’s not even personal. He wants to show her now. ‘I was just going to hit you and get my $30 million, but now I’m going to do it [mess you up],” Hopkins said.
Canelo will have to be careful because Berlanga punches hard and matches David Benavidez, a fighter Alvarez has shown no interest in fighting. Berlanga may have hit harder than Benavidez, but he lacks his punch combination, hand speed, and chin.
