One piece fever has gripped the world particularly hard in the last few years, and now that love is spreading across the pond to the UK.
Recently, the BBC acquired the rights to broadcast 1,085 episodes of the hit anime based on Eiichiro Oda’s equally epic manga. Episodes will hit the network’s free iPlayer service starting September 1 (aka, today) and gives way until the end of 2024. A big caveat is that only the English dub will be available (apologies to any sub purists). Although the BBC notes that this is the only place UK audiences can legally watch the show, it doesn’t sound like there are any plans to bring it to proper television like the US does with adult swimming, and it’s a question mark about the anime’s bulk. , many movies have been released over the years.
At the time of writing, there are about 1,120 episodes of One piece, so basically every anime will hit BBC iPlayer. Specifically, UK viewers will have access to the first arc of “East Blue” and up to “Land of Wano,” which wrapped up in late 2023. Per Fiona Campbell, BBC Three’s Director of Youth, acquiring rights to broadcast anime”[is] really interesting move. With over 1,000 episodes spread over four months, UK viewers will have plenty of time to digest and engage One piece before the end of the year. Of course, if that sounds too steep, there’s always Netflix’s live-action adaptation, its second season currently in production, and The One Piece, Netflix’s the rest the adaptation meant it as a more structured narrative of the anime.
