Nintendo can’t repair your New 3DS because they’re out of parts

Nintendo has stopped making new Nintendo 3DS. While it’s no surprise that the company has stopped supporting hardware that is ten years old, the reason in this case is that Nintendo just ran out of parts. The news spread on social media translated from the company’s Japanese support group.

Time is also running out for official repairs for the Nintendo 2DS and New Nintendo 3DS LL (known as the XL model in the US). Nintendo will stop repairing those handhelds when they also run out of stock of replacement parts.

Nintendo is making an entire 3DS line in 2020. The handhelds have had a long and influential run as the leading handheld gaming company. The New 3DS and New 3DS XL shipped worldwide at the end of 2016, while sales of the entire 3DS family reached 2020.

For now, US customers can still use Nintendo’s late model repair service. New 3DS owners can still try the DIY method if their handhelds break. The third-party repair platform stocks replacement parts and manuals in its online catalog. But like any piece of hardware that lasts for years, it may be wise to use extra care when using it. Like Jehovah, nothing lasts forever.
