will host a special conference in September to discuss lessons and precautions the industry can take from CrowdStrike. The Windows Endpoint Security Ecosystem Summit is scheduled for September 10 at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, WA.
The event will include representatives from Microsoft, CrowdStrike and other cyber and computer security companies. Participants will explore changes in industry practices and implementation of applications that could prevent future computer shutdowns.
anonymously says that one of the talking points at the conference will address the use of applications that rely heavily on Windows user mode instead of kernel mode. The end of July occurred because the Crowdstrike agent was running in kernel mode where the central processing unit gives the software full access to system resources and hardware. Applications in user mode are very isolated so they cannot bring down other systems.
Attendees will also discuss implementing eBPF technology in test systems without causing system crashes. This conference will also have discussions on using secure programming languages like Rust, which is one of the programming languages like C or C++.
CrowdStrike is suspected of being included in the review as the cause of the crash starting on July 19. The shutdown caused green screens of death in banking systems, airlines and businesses around the world.
