Snap is reportedly working on a new pair of augmented reality Spectacles
Snap is preparing to show off a new augmented reality headset, according to a new report on . The glasses will be the fifth generation of Spectacles, and the second pair will have real added power. CEO Evan Spiegel will reportedly unveil the glasses at the company’s upcoming Partner Summit event on September 17.
The company recently introduced AR glasses. The glasses were made available only to a few creators and developers, who came up with some exciting experiments including Snapchat lenses and AR displays. But, as I said about AR-enabled Spectacles that year, the device was still limited. It had a very small view and a battery life of only 30 minutes. The glasses were also very large and overlooked compared to previous generations of Spectacles that looked like ordinary glasses.
Now, it sounds like Snap has made some improvements to the underlying technology. The Verge reports that the latest glasses will have a wider field of view and better battery life. However, it seems that Spectacles is still positioned as more of a developer tool than something any Snapchat user will be able to afford. Each pair reportedly costs “thousands of dollars to build” and Snap plans to make “less than 10,000” of them.
Still, it suggests that Snap hasn’t completely abandoned its hardware ambitions. Its last new product was the $250 Pixy selfie drone, just four months after its 2022 launch. The company removed the device earlier this year after a battery fire was reported.
