Caleb Plant Feels Fear From Trevor McCumby, Aims To Use “Level Difference”
Caleb Plant says his opponent Trevor McCumby smells nervous ahead of their WBA interim super middleweight fight on September 14 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Former IBF 168-lb champion Plant (22-2, 13 KOs) feels that the combination of his tough upbringing and the fear of the 31-year-old McCumby (28-0, 21 KOs) gives him everything. the edge he needs to win.
A rematch with Canelo is possible
Whatever hard times Plant had over the years are over now. He has become a millionaire since his fight with Canelo Alvarez in November 2021, and his life and career are very different now.
Plant is now 32, has lost two of his last three fights, and has only fought twice since getting his life-changing cash-in from the Canelo fight. Career-wise, Plant could be one loss away from being washed up and stories forgotten by fans. Losing this fight to McCumby would spell the end of Plant’s career.
Plant needs this fight to put himself in a good position to defeat superstar Canelo Alvarez, who defends his super middleweight unification title against Edgar Berlanga in the main event of their card next month. The event will be shown live on DAZN PPV.
Canelo has not said who he will fight next if he wins against Berlanga, but it is possible that Plant will run because of his well-known position. You could argue that Plant wouldn’t be fighting in a matchup with him if he was considered the guy Canelo would face next.
We know that Canelo will not fight David Benavidez, Christian Mbilli, or David Morrell. Plant is better known than most competitors in the 168-lb division, and Canelo already knows he can beat him.
“When you start from the bottom, when you come from difficult places, that’s an aspect you learn. They feel that,” said Caleb Plant about Trevor McCumby before their fight on September 14.
It doesn’t matter if the fighter suffered growing up. They are different people when they have reached the position of being a millionaire and have lived richly for years. Money changes everything.
Plant Dysfunction is Worrying
Look at Terence Crawford. He only fights once a year now, and his abilities are impaired. Plant will have been out of the ring for 18 months when he faces McCumby next month on September 14.
Also, money changes a fighter for the worse, and it would be surprising if Plant is anywhere near the level of fighter he was three years ago when Canelo blessed him with a big payday in 2021.
“People smell that when, ‘This guy, he’s not like that.’ I can smell it,’ and I can feel the fear on him,” continued Plant about his theme of fear about his fight with McCumby. “If he thinks he’s scared now, when that bell rings, he walks out of that tunnel and it’s the biggest stage he’s ever been a part of, he can’t even imagine how big it’s going to be.
“I can assure you, I will show him, and I will show you the difference in levels,” said Plant.
