Guillermo del Toro Looks Back on 2015’s Crimson Peak
In the middle Pacific Rim (his most commercially successful film worldwide) and The Status of Water (his Oscar-winning smash), Guillermo del Toro is released Crimson Peak-a movie full of themes and a brilliant image that is dear to the heart of the Gothic that did not find its place with the audience or critics. Looking back in a new interview, he has an idea why the 2015 film was initially misunderstood.
Speaking to Vulture , del Toro explained that the marketing had something to do with it: audiences thought they were getting a horror flick—not a time of supernatural romance. “What I’m trying to do with it Crimson Peak that’s what I’ve tried to do in most of my movies: to make an action movie that works as an anti-action movie or, if possible Crimson PeakGothic love undermines romance,” he said. Later in the interview, he elaborates on that: “I knew I wanted to produce a spectacular, beautiful, theatrical spectacle, with sets and melodrama and beautiful lighting and, you know, just making it kind of a deal.”
Unfortunately, as the director recalls, Crimson PeakUnique emotions proved difficult to sell. “The thing that will always be associated with the pun, is worrying about that movie being marketed as a horror movie,” he told Vulture, recalling that at the time he knew it was a “doomed” plan. “I was like, ‘You have to develop the romance, and you have to develop the mystery. The last thing you want to do is raise it as something scary.’ We were opening in October, and October is the month of Halloween, so I understand why it happened.”
However, that makes him happy Crimson Peak has found its audience in the years since. “It’s a film that meets people they love at an almost molecular level,” he said. And del Toro, without a doubt, among their number; he calls it “one of my favorite movies and one of the closest to my heart.”
Guillermo del Toro’s next release will be his most anticipated decision Frankenstein for Netflix.
