The first round of the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, NC, takes on a formidable opponent: Tropical Storm Debby.

A powerful storm, making its second appearance overnight, brought heavy rain and strong winds to North Carolina, delaying the start of the tournament at Sedgefield Country Club by at least eight hours.

Timings for round 1, which was scheduled to begin at 6:50 am ET, were pushed back to just before 3 pm.

According to a report on the PGA Tour website, local meteorologist Stewart Williams said the rain “started between 2:30-3 a.m. Thursday.” As of 8 a.m., a total of 2 inches had fallen in Sedgefield with sustained winds of 15-25 mph and gusts between 30-40 mph. “

The Tour said the next update on the first-round schedule is scheduled for noon ET.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Debby made landfall early Thursday morning near Bulls Bay, S.C. The storm first made landfall as a Category 1 storm on Florida’s Gulf Coast on Monday.

On Wednesday, as there is a storm, the Tour has already taken the decision to prohibit fans from going to the first round.

“This decision was difficult for us to make with our partners on the PGA Tour, but everyone’s safety is our top priority,” said tournament director Bobby Powell. “The latest forecast looks like the storm could clear our area by Friday.”
