The Wyndham Championship will begin playing behind closed doors due to the storm
GREENSBORO, NC – The PGA Tour’s final event of the regular season, the Wyndham Championship, will begin Thursday without fans due to expected severe weather from Tropical Storm Debby.
The tournament announced on Wednesday that spectators will not be allowed for Sedgefield Country Club in the first round.
The opponents are scheduled to start playing at 6:50 a.m. Organizers say the game will continue as long as the conditions allow.
Fans with tickets for Thursday’s round can use those tickets for any of the final three rounds.
Tournament director Bobby Powell said the forecast calls for Debby to clear the area on Friday.
“This decision was difficult for us to make with our partners on the PGA Tour, but everyone’s safety is our priority,” Powell said in a statement.
Defending champion Lucas Glover said he cannot control the weather and how it affects his start time or the course.
“We’ll start when we start and I don’t think there’s much we can do about it,” Glover said. “If it’s 12:54 tomorrow, I’ll be ready to go. If it’s Friday at 4:00, I’ll be ready to go.”
The Tour’s FedEx Cup qualifiers for the top 70 all-season rankings begin next week in St. Jude FedEx Championship next week.
