Paolini Defeats Rybakina in Round A of WTA Finals

The beginning of the end began in Riyadh, Saudia Arabia as eight of the world’s best individuals gathered for the season-ending tournaments. In the last ten months, Elena Rybakina has been firing on all cylinders, winning in Brisbane (d. Sabalenka) and Abu Dhabi (d. Kasatkina) and in the tournament. WTA 1000 in Dubai, lost by walkover to eventual champion, Jasmine Paolini from Italy.
The twenty-five-year-old reached two more finals in both 1000 level (Doha and Miami) before winning on clay at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart on his way to the final, defeating Paolini in three quarters. The Italian would get his revenge, however, on the grand slam stage at Roland Garros with a three-set victory in the quarters.
Paolini, three years old, started the year in the top thirty and is now in the top four. In a great season, he won for the first time WTA 1000 in Dubai and reached two consecutive grand slam finals at the French Open (l. Swiatek) and Wimbledon (l. Krejcikova).
