A New York couple is accused of riding the subway

New York police have arrested one of two people they suspect rode a joyride on an empty subway train and crashed it.

The person arrested, a 17-year-old girl, is facing criminal charges for the incident that occurred at the Briarwood subway station in Queens, shortly after midnight on September 12.

He and his colleagues were accused of entering and driving the train, causing a “collision”.

The search for the friend continues. No injuries were reported in the accident.

The New York Police Department (NYPD) has provided few other details and it is unclear how the pair gained access to the train.

The BBC has contacted the NYPD and New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) for further comment on this feature.

And police have yet to reveal how far the two were able to travel on the train before fleeing.

Police surveillance footage showed one suspect dressed in pink – including a shower cap – and a second person in blue.

Along with the criminal charge, the arrested teenager was also charged with reckless endangerment.

The second person was described by the NYPD as a thin and light-skinned man, who was last seen wearing a blue tank top and red shorts, and carrying a black backpack.

A similar incident was reported in January at the Forest Hills-71st Avenue station in Queens. Again, no one was injured and no damage was reported.

At the time, officials speculated that the revelers were using a stolen key.

They moved to assure the public that the train would not have left the yard and reached the working track.
