The Wonderful Life of Ibelin’s First Trailer Blends Fact and Fiction
The first announcement from Netflix’s annual “Geeked Week” festivities, today the streamer dropped the first trailer The Wonderful Life of Ibelina documentary that mixes archive footage with animation from inside Blizzard’s 20-year-old pop legend, Military World.
Directed by Benjamin Ree, Ibelin follows the story of Mats Steen, a young Norwegian who died of a debilitating disease at the age of just 25. Although his family thought that Mats’ illness had left him alone until his death, they discovered that Mats’ social life flourished over the years. to play his own Military World character, Ibelin, who touches the lives of every human community around the world through the realms of Azeroth.
The documentary—which won the Audience Award at the World Cinema Documentary Competition at Sundance earlier this year—mixes archival family footage of Mats growing up and living with his illness, as well as his time performing, and interviews with Mats. Warcraft players who knew him only as Ibelin, and the impact he had on their lives through the MMORPG. But interestingly, the documentary will also feature narrated excerpts from Mats’ blog reporting on his second life in Azeroth, as well as a machinima recap of his journey Military World‘s game engine as it is now.
