Bandai has launched a new Tamagotchi model, and it’s actually made from recycled eggshells. The Real Tamagotchi Celebration digital pet is colored like a tan/brown egg, with blue and white designs and pink pixels and buttons. Tamagotchi comes from the Japanese words for egg (tamago) and watch (uotchi) – and the toy is undeniably egg-shaped – so the use of eggshells is perfect for the product. The model is assembled in a package that uses recycled paper, and Bandai says the model is in line with its mission to “develop a green future.”
The Tamagotchi is no longer just another toy from the 90s that millennials fondly remember playing with in their youth. It has made a quiet comeback in the past few years, with players both old and young contributing to its renewed growth. In May, the company also released the Tamagotchi Connection, which older fans may remember as the model with the fake antenna, to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Last year, Bandai released the Wi-Fi-enabled Tamagotchi Uni that gives users access to Tamaverse, a virtual gaming platform where players can meet others, so they can travel together and dress up their characters.
Real Tamagotchi Celebration doesn’t seem to have the modern features of Uni, but it does come with basic Tamagotchi gameplay. Players will have to raise their Tamagotchi to adulthood, feed it, give it medicine, clean up its messes, play with it and even discipline it when it acts out. Available exclusively on Amazon, it’s currently up for pre-order for $30.
