Mariah Carey’s mother and sister died on the same day

Mariah Carey’s mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison, died over the weekend, the American singer said in a statement.

“My heart is broken by the loss of my mother this past weekend,” Carey said on Monday. “Sadly, in a tragic situation, my sister died on the same day.”

The singer said he felt blessed to spend time with his mother a week before her death, and asked for privacy.

No further details were released about the cause of death.

Patricia, 87, was an Irish-American opera singer and vocal coach.

In Carey’s 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey, the five-time Grammy Award-winning singer detailed her complicated relationship with her mother, saying it “caused me a lot of pain and confusion”.

Carey said that competition existed between the two and that professional jealousy “comes with a place of success, but when someone is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a young age, it’s very painful”.

But he also spoke of the deep love he had for his mother, writing in the dedication: “To Pat, my mother, who I believe in everything, who I believe is really doing her best.” I will always love you with everything I can.”

In an interview with Gayle King in 2022, Carey said that her mother’s criticism growing up “had an effect on me”.

He went on to say that he always praises his mother for exposing him to music.

Carey’s relationship with her older sister Alison, 63, was also complicated.

In her memoir, she wrote about her breakup with her brother Morgan, saying it was “safer emotionally and physically for me not to communicate”.

Alison sued Carey for $1.2m (£909,780) following the release of the memoir for “extreme emotional distress”, calling it “vindictive”.

The singer’s father, Alfred, died in 2002 of cancer at the age of 72.

Carey is considered one of the most successful singers in the world.

Her holiday song “All I want for Christmas is You” is the best-selling Christmas song by a female artist of all time.

He holds the record for the most number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 by a single artist with 19 songs, has sold more than 220 million records worldwide, and served as a judge on the competition show American Idol.
