Rory McIlroy throws the club into the water during round 2 at BMW

CASTLE ROCK, Colo. — Rory McIlroy’s tee shot on the par-5 17th hole at Castle Pines is fouled. His 3 wood went into the water.
That summed up the day, and the PGA Tour postseason, for McIlroy. He bogeyed the hole with a 1-under 71 on Friday at the BMW Championship that left him 10 shots out of the lead.
As club throws go, this one was pretty easy.
McIlroy, coming off a three-putt bogey on the 16th hole, hit his drive to the right and 3-wood to the left. It bounced once and entered the water. He approached the edge of the water, stretched out his hand and fetched them.
It was very bad at Doral in 2015 at the World Golf Championship. McIlroy hit a 3-iron into the water, then moved the club into the middle of the lake. He used 13 clubs all the way. Donald Trump, who owns the Doral, has hired scuba divers to restore the club.
