Indonesia’s Independence Day was celebrated for the first time in the new capital
Indonesia celebrated Independence Day in its future new capital Nusantara for the first time – with celebrations postponed as construction continues.
The country was hoping to officially launch the city 79 years after it gained independence in 1945 after centuries of Dutch rule and then Japanese occupation during World War II.
But the project, on the island of Borneo, has been plagued by construction delays and financial problems.
It will be the biggest legacy of outgoing President Joko Widodo, who attended events alongside his successor Prabowo Subianto.
