Berlanga Is Confident He Can ‘Count’ Everything Canelo Throws
Edgar Berlanga says he will “resist” everything Canelo Alvarez throws at him on September 14 in their T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Berlanga (22-0, 17 KOs) says WBA, WBC, and WBO super middleweight champion Canelo (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is “soft” because he showed compassion to his Mexican opponent, Jaime Munguia , last May. . He feels that it was “soft” and “stupid” to do that, which shows that Canelo is not a real killer.
“I’m free and he doesn’t like that because he wants everyone to respect him. If he tries to come out with punches or hooks, I’m going to fight him hard,” said Edgar Berlanga on Fight Hub TV’s YouTube channel, talking about Canelo Alvarez.
Canelo was annoyed by all the stupid death talk Berlanga made during the press conference and his bragging that he “earned” his shot. The reason Berlanga got this fight is because Canelo chose him. He didn’t get paid by beating anyone.
If Canelo had not chosen him, Berlanga would have remained a rotten opponent for years until he was finally kicked out by one of the cans of tomatoes that his promoters are associated with. Berlanga has almost been beaten in several low-profile fights he has faced, against Roamer Alexis Angulo, 39, Steve Rolls, 40, and Marcelo Estaban Cocernes.
“You think I don’t punch hard. I know he can punch,” said Berlanga about Canelo. “I have a Glock for you. He looked at the situation. I didn’t hit 16 taxi drivers while fighting in Mexico. I fought with guys who went a long way.”
Canelo knows that Berlanga is strong because he can be crazy, but all of them at 168 can hit too, and many of them are more skilled than him. Berlanga is on the lower end of the spectrum in the talent department.
“I fought guys who were going a long way with the champion, I knocked them out in the first round. So my power is real, but you ignore it,” said Berlanga.
Edgar doesn’t talk about the fights he took out in the first round that went the distance with the champion because there aren’t any. He went the distance against journeymen Demond Nicholson and Marcelo Esteban Conceres, who have fought world champions before. However, Berlanga did not exclude Coceres and Nicholson.
“You are soft. “Deep down, you’re soft,” Berlanga said of Canelo, reacting to the fact that he was handling his last opponent, Jaime Munguia. “Real killers don’t do that.
“Seeing an interview the other day where he said he’s big and he’s over 20 lbs,” Berlanga said of Canelo, explaining why he doesn’t want to fight David Benavidez. “
He weighs the same as you at 168. So why does it matter? You got on the scale on Friday [before the fight]. What is important for him to jump up to 15 to 20 lbs? You jump up with the same weight. What is the difference here?”
Berlanga can’t teach Canelo about Benavidez when he doesn’t want to fight him or David Morrell for the title. Originally, Berlanga was the WBA’s ‘regular’ super middleweight champion which Morrell claimed earlier this year after an unknown Irish fighter, Padraig McCrory, in dethroning the title.
Berlanga did not want to fight Morrell even though he was forced to fight with the WBA. He only wanted to fight Canelo. So, he can’t teach Canelo not to fight Benavidez when he doesn’t want to fight him or Morrell. It makes him sound like a hypocrite, but whatever he needs to do, sell his fight.
In an ideal world, Berlanga would have been forced to fight Morrell to win the Canelo fight because if that had happened, you would have earned the fight rather than the fight being given to him.
“I’m Puerto Rican. “You know how Mexicans don’t like Puerto Rican heroes,” said Berlanga, failing to say that he is American, not Puerto Rican.
The fans don’t buy into the Mexican and Puerto Rican theme that Berlanga is trying to push because they don’t see him as Puerto Rican. He is from New York.
It would be better for Berlanga to focus on what he can bring to the fight table rather than playing the Puerto Rican angle, hoping to get a few more PPV buys. People just look at Berlanga as a New Yorker who won the title and does not compare to Canelo.
