In a recent interview with IndieWire, Deadpool and Wolverine screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick revealed that they originally wrote for Robert Downey, Jr.’s Iron Man. The Avengers throw.
Unfortunately, they wrote without knowing Marvel’s plans for Downey’s return to the MCU as Doctor Doom. According to Wernick, “Behind the scenes, we didn’t know about Doctor Doom [plans]. And there was no way he was going to do both. And then we said, ‘Oh, Downey doesn’t say ‘No’ to Ryan Reynolds, does he? No one says no to Ryan Reynolds.’ And Ryan gave him a hard machine. We wrote the scenes, Downey read the scenes, but what we didn’t know was behind this Doctor Doom thing. “
Reese gave his version of the incident in question he did made it into the finished film, but put in Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan instead. “It was a version of what you saw, in a sense [the Avengers] Wade refused. He just said he’s not a team player or whatever and questioned his team player skills. So it was actually very close to the place you saw. There were two boys instead of one,” he said. “I mean, look, we’d love to have Downey. But, at the same time, I think Marvel had this ace in their hole, which means he’s going to come back with this different character. So, to be Tony Stark? You know Doctor Doom was coming on the heels of that? It didn’t make sense.”
However, an earlier version of the Deadpool test had to be included all of them member of the original Avengers, before budget constraints and filming schedules were taken into account. As Wernick points out, “There was a version of that scene very, very early in the morning that wasn’t written, but was conceived, that had all the Avengers in the room. And Wade was rejected and then he dressed all the Avengers in a way that only Deadpool could do.”
While the film as released sees Deadpool moving well, everyone he meets, we are denied his acerbic humor, breaking the fourth wall in Hawkeye, Black Widow, Hulk, and company. Until Wade Wilson re-sprinkles the MCU, at least, we’ll have to fill ourselves with the character’s ribald barbs.
