Sonos Ace owners can now change the sound of the TV with Ray and Beam soundbars

Sonos has delivered on its promise to expand TV sound quality in its new Ace headphones, launched in June. When the premium cans arrived, support for the TV’s audio switching feature was limited to the Arc sound bar. But starting Tuesday, Ace owners can replace their audio with Ray and both generations of Beam.

After installing today’s update to the Sonos app, Ace users can stream audio from their TV to their headphones by pressing the content key on the right ear cup. Alternatively, the Sonos app can do the same. The feature works on iOS and Android after being limited on iOS to the arrival of headphones.

The TV’s audio exchange supports surround sound with Dolby Atmos, so you’ll feel “immersed in the action,” as a Sonos spokesperson says. Engadget’s audio gear expert, Billy Steele, was impressed with how well the feature worked with the NBA playoffs on TNT. “Normally, the commentary trio is clear with the crowd noise in the background, but after Sonos did their tricks, the announcers were much louder and louder. In addition, the excitement of the crowd envelops you so that you feel like you are on the field.”

Once activated, this feature works with a Wi-Fi chip inside the headphones that replaces the soundbar’s signal reception. Low-power Bluetooth will stay connected to your phone for controls and settings, though there’s one caveat: You’ll have to stop changing the volume to reconnect Bluetooth if a call comes in while you’re watching.
