Explosion Heard in Ukrainian Capital
Loud explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, early Saturday, as authorities warned of incoming missiles.
The air raid warning had just ended when booms were heard across the city at 5:50 am local time. Seconds later, an air raid siren sounded.
The country’s air defense systems were working, the city’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, wrote on Telegram, warning of the missile threat and urging residents to stay in shelters.
After a while, he said, emergency services rushed to the scene. The commander of the city’s military district said three people were killed.
Both sides in the nearly three-year war, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, have stepped up their attacks in recent weeks.
This is a developing story.
