The best ways to use your $50 gift card

If you played with those fridge magnets back in the day, Ransom Notes will give you a quick shot of nostalgia. And it has what I think is the most important quality in a party game: no complicated rules, setup or explanation needed. Each round begins with an open-ended question card, such as “describe a scary medical condition.” Players get a number of magnetic word tiles that they arrange into a (usually nonsensical) answer for that round. Each “ransom note” can be as detailed (or not) as you like. You may have the perfect set of words to make a sound answer but, in general, you’ll have to get a little creative with your answer. Sometimes, a word or two is all you need.

Either way, the mix of word tiles, leaning a little on the PG-13 side but not as foul-mouthed as “adult” party games like Cards Against Humanity, is such that hilarity is likely to follow. Officially, each round must have a “winner,” with the game ending after a set number of rounds have been completed. But it’s fun when you forget about trying to keep score and let everyone try to come up with the funniest and most random notes they can dream up. – Karissa Bell, Senior Reporter
