PornHub splits from Florida
Pornography website PornHub is adding Florida to its list of states to be banned starting next year. reports that Floridians who visited a porn website recently were greeted with a warning that said “You will lose access to PornHub in 14 days” due to a new state law requiring ID to visit the website.
PornHub has already blocked several states from accessing its wealth of sexually explicit content due to new state laws requiring visitors to provide a valid government ID to verify their age of access. The Florida legislature passed and Gov. Ron DeSantis signed it into law on March 25 as part of a series of laws aimed at protecting children from pornography. Florida will become the 13th state to enact age verification legislation for adult websites. Florida follows , , Arkansas, Virginia, , Mississippi, in that they all have ID verification laws on their books.
“This not only interferes with the rights of adults to access protected speech, but it fails to be carefully considered by using methods that are cost-effective and prevent them from achieving their goals. [the state’s] the purpose of the allegations is to protect children,” according to
PornHub’s blog also says that the company is concerned about the safety and well-being of children but the idea of using identification creates additional risks to the safety and privacy of users. Louisiana’s law in particular lacks a state regulator to oversee the implementation of new laws “leading to a flawed legal regime,” says the PornHub blog.
