A Year in Popcorn Buckets

When someone came up with the idea of turning a caterpillar into a bucket of popcorn, he didn’t know who he was. Did they create a funny internet experience? Yes. But they also started a trend that saw people go to theaters not just for movies or snacks, but also to collect cool stuff.

For years movie theaters have been looking for new, different ways to bring people to the theater: IMAX, 4DX, 3D, etc. In 2024, they got the answer with the appearance of the popcorn bucket: a limited edition collectible, in theory. , can be used to hold popcorn but is actually just a fun item that fans can buy and enjoy as a souvenir. Popcorn buckets aren’t new to theaters, and they’re not new elsewhere, but 2024 brought them into the limelight and it all started with them. Dune: Part Two.

I Dune: Part Two The popcorn bucket was supposed to be a sandworm. But pretty quickly the internet realized it looked like a sex toy, and, well, no one was going to shut up about it, us included. That meant some studios had buckets of popcorn in the works for films like this Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire again Godzilla x Kong: The New Empirea new light shone upon them.

A few weeks later, Marvel Studios announced that the ever-annoying Deadpool had created his own popcorn bucket Deadpool and Wolverine and the Oral Maker did not disappoint. Soon after, it appeared that Wolverine’s head, with a suspiciously open mouth, was coming out and all bets were off.

And while the Deadpool and Wolverine bucket was probably the most popular in the summer, personally we preferred the one released for Disney Alien: Romulus which was big and thick and … just the alien’s head.

As is often the case, summer turns to fall, autumn turns to winter, and since movie studios now have a few months to think about buckets of popcorn for their year-end releases, the buckets just keep on coming. Gladiator II he gave us the Roman Colosseum with a section of AR. Nosferatu he gave us a box of popcorn. And Sonic the Hedgehog got on board, with maybe one bucket that sounded relatively familiar.

The change at the end of the year is that buckets are no longer just your basic blockbusters. Now we make gothic horror films. Now we’re doing Oscar fare. And that’s just a sample. Basically, as the title of the article says, 2024 was the year of the popcorn bucket. The question is, can 2025 raise the stakes, or will they return to being lame?
