Five dead after shooting near Dunkirk
Five people have died in shooting incidents in northern France, including at a migrant camp, and a 22-year-old man has surrendered to police, according to French media.
Four people – two guards and two migrants – were shot dead near the camp in Loon-Plage, a coastal area near Dunkirk, unnamed security sources told outlets in France.
The gunman is suspected to have also confessed to the shooting incident in the nearby town of Worhout, according to the AFP news agency.
Local media said weapons were found in the suspect’s car. Dunkirk Mayor Patrice Vergriete said the cause of the attack was “still unknown”.
BBC News has contacted local authorities for comment.
Vergriete described the incident as a “tragedy” and said “someone killed several people” in the area.
Xavier Bertrand, head of the regional assembly, confirmed to X that five people died in a “tragic incident”.
French media reported that there were multiple emergencies near the migrant camp, although it was not clear whether the shooting took place in the settlement.
Loon-Plage is home to several temporary settlements for migrants. It is close to Calais and the Strait of Dover, which is a small part of the Channel.
Similar camps along the northern coast of France have been used by people trying to reach the UK in small boats.
