Apple will stop sales of the iPhone SE (third generation) and iPhone 14 series in Europe at the end of 2024 to comply with the European Union’s mandate for USB-C universal charging. The EU policy, which comes into force in January 2025, it requires new devices to include USB-C portswhich makes models with Lightning ports incompatible.
Rather than updating these devices with USB-C ports, Apple has chosen to end its sales in Europe ahead of schedule. Normally, the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus will remain available in the region until the end of 2025 when the iPhone 17 is launched. This decision means that Apple will give up almost a year of sales for these models in Europe.
Thanks to its lightning connection, the only iPhone with Touch ID will soon be discontinued in Europe.
This move is part of Apple’s transition away from the Lightning port. The upcoming fourth-generation iPhone SE, expected in spring 2025, will use USB-C and feature design updates similar to the iPhone 14, including an edge-to-edge display and improved camera.
Outside the EU, Apple will continue to sell the iPhone SE and iPhone 14 series until their normal end-of-life cycles, probably until the start of the new SE model and the final exit of the 14 series in late 2025.
This change marks the end of the Lightning port era for Apple devices, aligning the company with global standards and EU regulations. Despite the early discontinuation, the impact on Apple’s overall sales is expected to be minimal, as new models equipped with USB-C will replace the outgoing ones.
