LG has discontinued all of its Blu-ray players, including its UBK80 and UBK90 UHD Blu-ray players, according to . The remaining stock is still available, but the company has no plans to make more. This decision is not surprising, because LG is not the first company to exit the UHD Blu-ray player market.
UHD Blu-ray is a different format than regular Blu-ray, as the former has a higher resolution of 3840×2160 pixels (4K). Blu-ray is 1920×1080 (FHD) instead.
The UBK80 and UBK90 UHD Blu-ray players were in 2018, which is also the year Oppo entered the market. Samsung will release their own in 2019, giving consumers several options for UHD Blu-ray players. Although LG is discontinuing all its Blu-ray players, LG Korea has confirmed it in a statement FlatpanelsHD that a complete exit is unlikely, as the company as a whole leaves the door open to return if demand increases.
There is still a small silver lining to the UHD Blu-ray market. Magnetar’s can handle formats and more, even work with a hi-fi audio player. Also, the PS5 can also handle the format, but it cannot play Dolby Vision, a favorite of high-quality video lovers. And the Xbox Series X only plays Dolby Vision for games and streaming apps, not optical discs.
Streaming has become more popular by the day, and most people don’t even have a working CD player, let alone a Blu-ray. With demand so low, it’s not hard to see why LG decided to discontinue its Blu-ray players.
