Clone Alpha: A Humanoid Robot With Artificial Muscles

Clone Robotics, a Polish biomimetic robotics company, has unveiled its first fully humanoid robot, Clone Alpha. This advanced android includes artificial limbs, artificial muscles, and a skeletal structure that mirrors human anatomy, aiming to push the boundaries of humanoid robots.

The company wants to replicate the intelligence and power of living things by mimicking the human form before allowing movement, from a traditional robot design.

Clone Alpha’s core functionality is Myofibera artificial muscle technology to be launched in 2021. These water-powered muscles attach to precise points naturally in the skeleton, mimicking the characteristics of mammalian muscles such as fast response times, high contraction strength, and efficient energy use. The system brings to life a full humanoid skeleton with 206 bones, minimal articulation, and fully articulated joints, providing up to 164 degrees of freedom in the upper torso and a realistic range of motion.

The robot includes an extensive sensor system, including 70 inertial sensors for joint feedback, 320 pressure sensors for monitoring muscle strength, and visual input from four depth cameras. Data processing relies on NVIDIA’s Jetson Thor GPU using Clone’s Cybernet model. In addition, the integrated electric pump simulates the human heart, delivering hydraulic pressure through the new Aquajet valve system to activate the active muscles.

Aside from showing impressive parts and a humanoid torso with lifelike movements, Clone Robotics has yet to show off a fully functional Alpha robot. Moving from prototypes to finished systems will test the robustness of their approach.
