Google Photos now has a 2024 recap feature

Google Photos recently launched a year-end recap feature, which is a play on things like Spotify Wrapped and PlayStation Wrap-Up. This is a highlight reel of notable images collected throughout the year, as well as “exciting images and cinematic effects.” I can’t wait to see the cleaned up pictures of my cats.

In addition to random images and results, the system will also generate captions to help identify two important events of the year for each user. These captions will be generated by Gemini, although users must opt in. Google gave us examples of attending a wedding and taking a trip to Seoul.

The Recap feature will provide “insights” in the form of information about a particular user’s photography habits. This could describe anything from a favorite color to the person the user smiles the most with. Google also promises that Recap will be detailed about the user’s “2024 vibes.” 2024 vibes? Yes.

Like rival annual recap tools, people can easily share everything on social media. There’s also a bit of a competitive element here, as each link will include data about a particular user’s longest image sequence. Nothing creates bragging rights like “you only took 560 photos this year, and I took 570.”

This feature is currently being rolled out to all users. Just look for a notification from Google Photos that says it’s ready to view. The app also recently added a tool to find AI-altered images and, uh, other tools to manipulate images using AI.
