Romania’s constitutional court annulled the results of the presidential election.
It means that the process will be restarted from the beginning, the government will decide the date of the new vote.
The results of that first round saw Calin Georgescu, an almost unknown Nato striker who has praised Vladimir Putin, win the majority of the vote.
The court said it took this step “to ensure the accuracy and legitimacy of the election process”.
Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said the court’s decision to withdraw was “the only correct decision”.
Constitutional Court judges said they had received requests to overturn the result, citing intelligence documents released this week that alleged Russian influence on social media.
The judges of the court met on Friday morning, although they had announced the previous night that they would not discuss new information about possible external influence on the election until the second round of voting.
The law stipulates that, in the event of an annulment, the election must continue on the second Sunday after the date of annulment – which would mean 22 December.
However, the court decided to ask the government to restart the election process, as well as the election campaign.
