Wicked’s Soundtrack Hits Number 2 on Billboard Chart

According to Deadline, “Universal Pictures, Verve Records, and Republic Records soundtrack to The first part movie soundtrack held at #1 on the chart (dated December 7) with Kendrick Lamar’s surprise album debut GNXmarking his fifth consecutive chart topper.” But hey we think Kendrick Lamar’s muuuustaaaaard looks great with Ariana Grande’s Pink and Cynthia Erivo’s Green.
According to Deadline, reporting on Billboard statistics, “They are not bad had the biggest sales week for a stage and screen musical film since dreamgirls,” released in 2006, and “the last time a stage and screen musical made the top five was when Chicago hit no. 4 on February 1, 2003, peaking at No. 2 a week later. The final stage and screen movie soundtrack finally made it to the top two Les Misérableswhich spent a week at No. 1 on the chart as of January 19, 2013.”
Another win with They are not badThe soundtrack adds that it debuted with “139,000 equivalent album units earned in the week ending November 28—the biggest week for a full-length theatrical film since Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper.” A Star is Born gained 143,000 units in its second week; They are not bad has many bop hits (“Famous,” “Dancing for Life,” “Defying Gravity”) that seem likely to further their success. The songs also generated digital streams of “67.66 million” hits, which is not only the biggest for the song but “the biggest streaming week ever for a stage and screen musical.”
