The new game from Tencent looks like a blatant Horizon ripoff
Details about the upcoming sci-fi superhero-themed game have just dropped. The images and teaser trailer show a post-apocalyptic world where people dressed in retro-style costumes battle giant dinosaur-like robots while orchestral music plays. Everything seems normal. But wait, this isn’t the next Horizon game from Guerrilla. Oh, no, no. This is the first look at a game from Tencent subsidiary called Polaris Quest.
Guerrilla and Sony don’t exactly hold the reins of robot dinosaurs or open world design games. But in the beginning, The Light of Motiram it’s a clear Horizon ripoff. It mimics Guerilla’s art style and animation, right down to multi-lens lighting. One image shows three human characters using bows and spears to wield a mammoth-style machine. Even the game’s logo font and monkey description are Horizon’s – The Light of Motiram it is about humanity’s attempt to “rebuild from the beginning of a new era of antiquity.”
There are differences, in fairness. Here, you can build shelters for yourself, while trained “Machines” can help you in combat. There is co-op support for up to 10 players. While Guerrilla is working on a multiplayer game, the latter Lego Horizon Adventures the spinoff is the only Horizon game to date to feature co-op.
In a sense, fans of the Horizon series will understand why the games should be seen as successful. We’ll have to wait and see how well Polaris Quest copies Aloy’s adventures. The Light of Motiram it doesn’t have a release window yet, but the seemingly free-to-play title is coming to Steam and the Epic Games store. Unless Sony beats Tencent to cease and desist first, that is.
