‘Big strike’ in Ukraine’s energy sector, minister says
Russia has launched a “major strike” on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, the country’s energy minister said, as explosions were reported in several cities.
Herman Halushchenko said on Facebook that attacks on power plants are “happening all over Ukraine” and have started with emergency blackouts, urging people to take shelter.
Early on Thursday, the Ukrainian Air Force issued an airstrike warning across the country “due to the threat of missile danger”.
Recent days have seen Russia act 1,500 air strikes in Ukraine, hitting almost half of the country’s regions, according to the authorities.
The air force also issued warnings of missiles, rockets and airstrikes aimed at several places across the country, including Kyiv, Rivne, Vinnytsia, Kropyvnytskyi, Balta, and Mykolaiv.
The mayor of Kharkiv, Igor Terekhov, said there was gunfire in a civilian area of the city, while the mayor of Lutsk, Ihor Polishchuk, said several explosions were heard. The power was out in part of the city.
Local media Zerkalo Tyzhnya reported that explosions were heard in the port city of Odesa, and regional governor Oleg Kiper urged residents to stay somewhere safe.
Authorities in Sumy and Volyn regions also reported strikes.
