With They are not bad reigning at the box office this week, fans lost the Shiz about which villain is responsible for the conflict between Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). The blame is placed on the sister who wears shiny shoes. But with another big bad revealed at the end of the first episode of the two-part musical epic, are the claims that Nessarose (Marissa Bode) is coming (“it” being Dorothy’s house she lives in) valid?
The Wicked Witch of the East—Nessarose’s assigned name—who destroys Dorothy’s farm is a canon event that has been the main plot of all the adaptations. The Wizard of Oz. Kansas tornado carries house over rainbow; it falls to the witch with only her feet peeking out, enabling Dorothy to summon her famous slippers. That begins a series of events that lead to the death of the Wicked Witch of the West by melting water.
Now we know that the really evil Madam Morrible (Michelle Yeoh) has power over the weather (Tornadoes) and that the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) is a hoax, but how? They are not bad posited that the Wicked Witch of the East is Nessarose—and that her shoes have no power yet?
Hints about Nessarose’s treatment of Elphaba throughout the film. As a TikTok commenter (like @aspoonfulofchae below) hilariously pointed out, “I’m on the side of the house, the house didn’t do anything wrong,” reading Nessa’s dirt on her hot take.
Points are made. Nessa treated Elphaba just as badly as their father did—and shall we say she couldn’t wait to run away from him in Shiz to start over without her help, until Morrible overruled her father’s strange decision to let Nessa go to him. in college? I mean, what was Elphie doing in Munchkinland while she was running things as Mayor? Was he just hiding from her? He was clearly talented and Nessa was upset when he jumped to his defense and was especially welcomed by Shiz and Morrible as his mentor. She didn’t like her sister at all, and that’s weird!
Then there’s Nessa lusting after Boq and giving Glinda credit for setting them up at the Ozdust ballroom; although he knows all the time that “because I am in this seat and he took pity on me,” he allows him to settle in himself, knowingly. Adding to her showing of a hand as the Worst Witch in the jump, when Elphaba shows up and interrupts her date with Boq she does nothing to stand up for him when the entire club ostracizes her sister. THEIR SISTER! The brutality runs deep here and it’s no surprise that his mother’s shoes become a sticking point Wicked Part Two when Dorothy took them.
Not to get too into spoilers Wicked Part TwoNessarose’s shoes are enchanted in a way that contributes to her rise as the Wicked Witch of the East before Dorothy arrives, that’s a given. The second act of the musical moves a little further into the future and will pick up Nessa as she almost takes over the reins of leadership from her father in Munchkinland—and based on how happy they were. The Wizard of Oz in his death, he set up a bigger villain curve. They don’t really like the Thropp family and maybe their happiness to be freed from it comes from their horrible father, too.
There is a lot to be said about Nessarose and Elphaba holding the smoke of their people when their mother did not like their father well to be honest. Both lived their whole lives. Nessa’s role in the story goes beyond ableist tropes allowing her to become a fully realized character defined beyond her disability, and her narrative plays with that self-deprecation of her disability the way Elphaba’s stigmatization plays with racist themes. Each woman’s relationship with society, which stems from those roles, is what ultimately transforms them magically Part Two. This is where the story reveals that true evil can come from every human flaw anyone is allowed to have.
Also, we need to give space to see how Nessarose fits her father’s narrative about Elphaba and how he is the wrong man here. We’re glad he died when he saw Elphaba take her powers during “Defying Gravity;” Nessa, on the other hand, looked angry that their family’s reputation was ruined.
Anyway They are not bad not being an official prequel The Wizard of Oz film, this variety of characters feels huge and gives you a lot to draw from (and contradict) in your interpretation of that indeed it happened that led to Dorothy killing the Wicked Witch of the West.
Elphaba is definitely not Mrs. Gulch/Wicked Witch of the West who hates the dog from 1939. Oz film (as portrayed by the iconic Margaret Hamilton). Instead, he is more like a variation of the Marvel style where his story is presented as a hero with some fixed points, including his desire for his sister’s shoes once Nessarose is properly adopted by Dorothy’s house.
Really, though, big props to Marissa Bode for the amazing job of acting and sowing those seeds of the Wicked Witch of the East—because even after her inevitable end, her presence lives on, causing all the drama between Elphaba and Glinda with those sparkly heels when the kid. he snatches them away.
