New research shows that the highest-paid tech jobs vary greatly from region to region.
AI education platform DataCamp drew on 2023 salary data published by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics to find the tech jobs with the best average compensation by state. While New Jersey’s leading role was data engineer, with a median annual salary of $158,930, the highest paying position for its neighbor, New York, was software engineer, with a median salary of $150,020.
California, too, had software development as the highest paying occupation on average, with a median salary of $173,780.
“The technology industry is changing rapidly every day, and the diversity of high-paying roles across states reflects the different needs and priorities of businesses in different states,” said DataCamp founder Martijn Theuwissen. “From this, states like California, which is home to many technology startups, are throwing a lot of money into the software development sector, which is likely to increase productivity and quality.”

The highest paid job that emerged, with 19 states having it, was not software development but database builder. Fifteen states had computer network architect as the highest paying role, while only 12 had software development as the highest compensated technical occupation.
Researchers behind the list caution that the jobs on the list may change in a few years.
“As businesses increasingly rely on data-driven solutions and tools, the demand for professionals who can maintain these things will grow, and new job titles will likely emerge,” predicts Theuwissen.
