Mass Effect creator’s new studio is closing after three years

Humanoid Origin will be closed. The three-year-old indie studio, helmed by BioWare GM and Mass Effect creator Casey Hudson, is the latest victim in a vicious series of game developers and other industry professionals.

In a LinkedIn post announcing the closure, Humanoid Origin said their efforts to protect their team from industry concerns had failed. “An unexpected lack of funds has left us unable to continue working,” the studio wrote.

Hudson founded the studio (then called Humanoid Studios) in 2021 when the industry’s hiring was booming after the COVID-19 shutdown. He described the startup as a way to “liberate the creative freedom of developers” by “bringing innovation and creativity to players through new IP.” Its website celebrates globally-created content, characters and storytelling while embracing innovation that “feels magical.”

The following year, the studio said it was working on a multi-platform AAA game “in a new science fiction universe.” IGN noted on Monday that Humanoid Origin was hiring as recently as May of this year.

“We’re saddened that we won’t be able to finish our new science fiction universe,” the studio wrote today. “Our main concern at this time is our team, and we are willing to support them in their transition to a new job.”
