TaylorMade is relaunching the Spider Tour X Proto putter – with a twist

While Scottie Scheffler finally got into the off-the-rack Spider Tour X putter this year, leading him to an impressive seven-win season on the PGA Tour, other flats he’s tried along the way have also garnered a lot of interest.
Scheffler tested – and briefly played – a unique example of the Spider Tour X during the 2023 FedEx Cup Playoffs with a milled face instead of the usual TaylorMade Pure Roll insert. In addition to the milled face, which is on a large plate bolted to the front of the putter, the prototype also had no adjustable weight holes on the back. In their place were curved sections to maintain the shape with two weighted TSS holes moved forward on the sole.
All of these tweaks gave Scheffler the advantages of the Spider Tour X shape while retaining the blade-like features familiar to his previous players.

$500
Originally a Tour exclusive, the Spider Tour X Proto is now available at limited prices. This unique design has been meticulously engineered to move the center of gravity (CG) as far forward as possible, while maintaining the True Path™ Alignment and structural stability of the Spider franchise.

That putter didn’t last long in Scheffler’s bag, and it was assumed that its run would end as a tour-only creation. But last fall TaylorMade surprised many by releasing a limited number of Spider Tour X Proto’s with Scheffler milled inserts.
Now, TaylorMade is bringing the prototype back for another limited run.
This time, however, the putter comes with a new black finish, while the original gun finish is also still an option. Both are new Spider Tour X Proto Black and Gunmetal is available in both slim fit and L-neck options for $500.
The only difference between the new system released Monday and last year’s version is the black finish that goes over the True Path alignment system on the top of the putter. Even the visible line remains black against the blacktop to create a dramatic contrast against the white golf balls.
