A few years ago, Games Workshop finally started taking unprecedented steps to update the models of one of them Warhammer 40,000The most popular factions: Aeldari levels, lithe, elven aliens have been part of the tabletop game for almost 40 years. But even with those significant updates, the Aeldari model line was still home to some of the oldest miniatures that Games Workshop still sold… but next year, that will finally change.
As part of a special preview event ahead of the upcoming one Warhammer World Championships, today Games Workshop revealed the upcoming revision of the latest Aeldari rulebook, tenth edition Warhammer 40K. Alongside the revised rulebook will be an array of new miniatures focusing on one of the most unique aspects of Aeldari culture: the Aspect Warriors, families of special operatives devoted to certain schools of martial thought, and their legendary leaders, famous in the Phoenix Lords.
While these units and warriors are important aspects of Aeldari lore—and often the mainstays of an Aeldari army—team players have spent literally decades running those same-model Aspect Warriors while watching Games Workshop find ever-growing ways to sell people. the new Space Marine. Until recently, most Aeldari key models were based on sculpts that had been around for the better part of 20 years. Some of the oldest among these types were those of the eight Aspect Warrior archetypes: Howling Banshees, Striking Scorpions, Swooping Hawks, Dire Avengers, Warp Spiders, Fire Dragons, Dark Reapers, and Shining Spears. Many of these models were so old that they were still cast in metal or eventually resin, and Games Workshop took their sweet time updating them bit by bit over the years. Howling Banshees are getting a 2019 model overhaul (replacing models from 2006), while Dark Reapers and Shining Spears are being updated as part of that 2022 line overhaul (replacing models from 2006 and 1999 , respectively), and the Striking Scorpions reviewed this. year with a game of low intensity Kill Team (changing models again, since 2006).
Today’s news brings almost every other category of Aspect Warrior to the level of modern plastic. Fire Dragons, Swooping Hawks, and Warp Spiders will receive updated multi-part plastic models to replace the metal and resin kits from 2006, 2000, and 1994respectively. Alongside those flagship teams, the company has also unveiled updates to its accompanying Phoenix Lords—highly heroic units that are the flagships of each Aspect—in the form of Fuegan (king of the Fire Dragons), Baharroth (the Swooping Hawks), and , for the first time in miniature form , Lhykis, king of the Warp Spider, alongside the Dire Avenger king Asurmen. Putting aside Lhykis as a brand new character, these miniatures all replaced the “current” models from 1994.
It should be emphasized that Games Workshop charged these ancient miniatures the same kind of price that any miniatures out there would, despite their ever-increasing age—and Aeldari players had to deal with and look like no other. groups get new miniatures and are constantly updated. As a lifelong team player, it was not easy for me in my journey to get out and about Warhammer 40K as an adult you played the same miniatures that I would buy as a 10 year old getting into tabletop gaming for the first time. And it took most of that life for that to change!
But finally, now it is. There are still Aeldari models showing their age—among the Aspect Warriors at least, Asurmen’s Dire Avengers haven’t been updated since 2006, and the leader of the Striking Scorpion, Karandras, is now a Phoenix Lord who remains unupdated. 30 years (and counting). Hopefully with the new team rules coming sometime in 2025, it won’t take that long to see these remaining legends get the new plastic treatment they deserve too… and hopefully these new models, as they look now. in 2024, they won’t be on the shelves in the 2060s. After all, in the bleak future of the 21st century, there must always be new plastic soldiers to buy.
