For better or worse, almost everything is a franchise these days, or tries to be. It wasn’t that long ago Boys it stands alone as a brutal, often bloody takedown of high-end money and the current cultural climate. While that hasn’t changed, the show has also become the mother of a much larger business with several spinoffs vying for attention—and for creator Eric Kripke, the worst outcome would be things getting out of hand.
During a recent Collider interview, Kripke talked about the power within the Boys universe once the big show wraps up for season five. He said that the group is analyzing everything that is currently in the works, and he admitted that they are living with “the great fear of becoming something that we have been living with for five years.” Regardless of how it may seem, Kripke emphasized that the team really cares about every game they made (or will make), and that they “try hard not to sell out. […] I worry about that every day.” In his eyes, Boys “punk rock” compared to other mainstream shows, and can suck when punk rockers say they’re going the commercial route.
So far, there have been two spinoffs alongside the new season of Guys, with at least two more shows on the horizon after the series finale. According to Kripke, growing up Boys while making sure it still has its reputation is a “tricky balance,” as they can look to other franchises as a guide. Any expansions of the universe are made to tell stories that can’t be told in the main show, from the college legends of Gen V for whatever retro adventure awaits Vought Rising. Whatever else you want to say about it, these games are not thought of in the blink of an eye: he said the team is “very careful and thoughtful about the decisions we make and they are able to defend why we make them. ” And if you don’t like a particular spinoff, Kripke is fine with that, he just hopes that you also recognize the general quality of the franchise.
How do the writers do that while making sure each show can be supported by Prime Video and parent company Amazon? He didn’t say, so we’ll see when the balance is struck Boys returns in 2025, with Gen V and it will arrive sometime next year.
